Building Organisational Resilience in a Volatile World

In today’s hyper-connected world, the boundary between digital and physical security is no longer distinct—it is dissolving. Cyber threats are no longer confined to stolen data or isolated breaches; they now disrupt operations, threaten critical infrastructure, and erode the trust that organisations depend on to survive and grow.

According to the World Economic Forum Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026, the cyber landscape is intensifying at an unprecedented pace. Attacks are not only becoming more frequent but also more sophisticated and impactful. What was once a technical concern has evolved into a core business risk—one that demands attention at the highest levels of leadership.

Yet, despite this growing awareness, many organisations remain underprepared. A clear resilience gap persists, driven by shortages in skilled personnel, fragmented processes, and inconsistent adoption of security best practices. The result is a widening divide between organisations that can withstand disruption and those that struggle to respond.

The Workforce Challenge: Closing the Skills Gap

One of the most pressing issues highlighted in the report is the shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals. The contrast is stark: only 22% of highly resilient organisations report a lack of talent, compared to 85% of those with insufficient resilience. This gap is more than a hiring issue—it is a strategic vulnerability.

For smaller organisations, building an in-house cybersecurity team can be both costly and complex. In these cases, partnering with managed security service providers offers a practical path forward. By accessing external expertise, organisations can strengthen their defences without the burden of maintaining a full internal team, enabling them to remain agile while improving their security posture.

Embedding Security into Business DNA

Resilience is not achieved through technology alone—it is built into the fabric of how an organisation operates. The most resilient organisations integrate cybersecurity into their core business processes rather than treating it as an afterthought.

A clear example is procurement. Among highly resilient organisations, 76% involve cybersecurity teams in purchasing decisions, compared to just 53% of less resilient peers. This proactive approach ensures that risks are identified early, rather than addressed after vulnerabilities have been introduced.

This shift—from reactive defence to proactive design—marks a critical evolution. It reflects a mindset where security is not a barrier to innovation, but an enabler of sustainable growth.

Securing the Future: The AI Imperative

Emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, are reshaping the cyber landscape at speed. While AI offers powerful tools for detection and defence, it also introduces new vulnerabilities that organisations must manage carefully.

The report reveals a significant gap in how organisations approach AI security. While 71% of highly resilient organisations regularly assess the risks associated with AI, only 20% of less resilient organisations do the same. This disparity highlights a crucial truth: innovation without security is a liability.

As AI adoption accelerates, organisations must ensure that governance, risk assessment, and oversight evolve in parallel. Without this, the very technologies designed to enhance performance could become entry points for new threats.

A Holistic Approach to Resilience

Cyber resilience is not a single initiative—it is an ongoing commitment that spans people, processes, and technology. It requires leadership alignment, strategic investment, and a willingness to rethink traditional approaches to risk.

Organisations that succeed will be those that adopt a holistic model—one that integrates security across every layer of the business and leverages trusted partnerships to fill capability gaps. In an environment defined by uncertainty, resilience becomes a competitive advantage.
